Controlled Combat takes divisions and brackets very seriously. A bad match up does not help any individual competitor. Our organization will do everything we can to ensure a fair and equitable matchup.

  • There will be a table available prior to matchups to answer any questions and discuss the movement of a competitor to another division

  • If possible, divisions will be split by singular age group with our 4-17 competitors. (4 vs. 4, 8 vs. 8, 13 vs. 13, etc.)

  • Jiu Jitsu Belt ranks are taken very seriously and there will not be movement from a higher rank to lower rank division unless approved by lower belt rank competitors (or parents/coaches)

  • 30+ years old competitors may compete down in age but no less than the 25-30 years old group

  • Competitors that have participated in Collegiate wrestling and/or professional competition may not compete as a white belt

  • 13/14 years old

  • 15/16 years old

Experience (Return to Top of Page)

Experience will be based on Jiu Jitsu Belt Ranks:

  • Gi and No Gi (Kids)

    • White (no submission matches are NOT available)

    • Grey with White/Grey/Grey with Black

    • Yellow with White/Yellow/Yellow with Black

    • Orange with White/Orange/Orange with Black

    • Green with White/Green/Green with Black

  • Teenagers, Young Adults, and Adults

    • White

    • Blue

    • Purple

    • Brown

    • Black

  • Exhibition Matches are available for all levels of competitor, please be sure to mark this on your event registration for proper matchups. An Exhibition Match will require the registration fee however, these matches will NOT go against your official record.

    • Ex. 1) A 6 year old training for 6 months may compete in exhibition vs another competitor to gain exposure to the competition circuit in a less stressful environment. Referees may take time to assist and help coach the competitors while in an official match, this is not the case.

    • Ex. 2) An adult white belt may be in their first tournament and would prefer their first tournament to be exhibition and not have a loss (or win) on their record. This exhibition match could assist them in making a decision on whether they want to compete in future tournaments.

    • Ex. 3) An adult black belt may want to have an exhibition match against another competitor to showcase their skillset while not having it count against their official record.
